“I make the city quiet.”

Tim Saternow is an American painter whose watercolor paintings explore the lost and forgotten edges of the urban landscape. His work encompasses the empty streets of Lower Manhattan, finding the ordinary and overlooked of New York City, and the dignified old houses of Provincetown, on Cape Cod.

Saternow, trained as a set and lighting designer in theater, and as an art director in film, he frames his settings before the characters arrive. His urban landscapes begin with the precise draftsmanship sharpened by his years of designing theater and film sets, he then attacks that precision with drips and thrown paint, detonating blooms of color across unusually large watercolor paintings.

Saternow's mastery lies in the way shadow interrupts light revealing the textures of brick, glass, and concrete - the worn facades of old buildings and their puddled, neglected side streets of empty cars and parked trucks. These are streets we pass without a word.
